THE INVITE It all starts with an invitation. Send them out about 1 month ahead of time. Luau season is also vacation season and your kanes and wahines need time to plan ahead. Plan for a day when you expect the weather to cooperate. never attempt to throw a luau during the winter months... It's just not done and you could well upset the Tiki Gods and you don't want to upset the Tiki Gods!!! DO YOU??? Unless of course, you're fortunate enough to live in Hawaii, Australia or some other nice place with year-round luau weather. .

... Try to make your invites by hand....go on, try! They don't need to be perfect, just fun and exotic! Remember: luaus are supposed to be FUN and EXOTIC! Shabby is good too! A good invite helps to get that tiki, shabby, luau, aloha spirit energy thing stirring in your guests. Lately we've been creating our invites on our Mac and emailing them out. It saves a lot of time! OUR 2002 LUAU INVITE Make sure you request that ALL your guests wear island attire. Shorts, aloha shirts, bare feet, grass skirts, sarongs, coconut bras, loincloths or whatever will set the mood. (Another good reason why you shouldn't throw a luau in the winter. Brrrrr!) , aaaaa

COSTUMES You might want to consider a theme with prizes for the best costumes. Shopping for the prizes can be alot of fun. Adult novelty stores are a good place to look for gag gifts. Our theme this year was 'Headhunters and Savages" 2002 COSTUME PICS

START WATERING Ok, now you've got to get the place ready. Your guests are going to need a nice green lawn or patio to hang out at. You can certainly throw a great luau indoors if you live in an apartment or condo... but outside is better. if you live in So. Cal (or similar climate) and your luau is scheduled during the hot summer months, start watering the luau site everyday at least one month in advance. If you have flowers and plants water them daily and fertilize them once a week with liquid Miracle Grow plant food. Thriving flora and fauna will give a perfect backdrop to your luau. We even stick silk flowers in and around our jungle and most guests can't tell which ones aren't real, especially after a couple Mai Tais!
If you need to plant more flowers, plant large bedding plants now so they'll have time to get established. impatiens, marigolds, petunias and other summer annuals are great for quick color. Plant lots of impatiens and ferns in shady areas. Very tropical! In just 4 weeks time your backyard or patio will look like Kauai's north shore!
